In this lesson I introduce you to the 12 cranial nerves! These are the nerves that originate from various parts of the brain and primarily impact parts of our head and neck, with some notable exceptions. I find that most people working outside the Neuro ICU do not have a great understanding of these nerves.

I start off explaining about what cranial nerves our and introduce the idea of afferent (sensory) and efferent (motor) functions of the various nerves.

We then move on an talk about each of the 12 cranial nerves going one-by-one, explaining what number they are, what their name is, where they originate, and then whether they are sensory, motor, or both, including the basic functions of each of the nerves. This is a basic overview of each of them, as they will be explained in more depth in a future lesson.

Next I go over a few different strategies to help you to remember what the cranial nerves are. I start off with the face drawing technique and walk you through that. Next I talk about 2 different mnemonics for memorizing the names and order of the cranial nerves. Lastly, I also provide a couple different mnemonics to help you to remember if the nerve is a sensory, motor, or both.
