How China Got Rich | Business Documentary from 2019

Over 40 years China has been transformed out of all recognition, the scale of its growth and the sheer speed of change has been astonishing. The country has seen the largest lifting of people out of poverty that has ever taken place in human history, and today China is a global force, predicted to become the world’s biggest economy in a couple of decades.

So how did an impoverished and backward communist country become an engine of global capitalism? What actually happened 40 years ago to set China on the road to prosperity?

Michael Wood talks to the people who were there; the men and women who had been sent to be ‘re-educated ‘on farms and in factories; the farmers who defied the government and broke with communism; the woman has given the very first private business certificate; and the US technical advisor sent to China by the UN to kickstart the change. He travels across the country to meet China’s highest-ranking female diplomat and the people who worked with Premier Deng Xiaoping. The film mixes these testimonies with a fascinating archive of the Chinese leader meeting President Carter in Washington and on fact-finding missions in Japan and Singapore. Interviews too with Deng’s biographer, Professor Ezra Vogel from Harvard University and Ambassador James Stapleton-Roy who lifts the lid on the intensive work behind the scenes which led to the US recognizing the People’s Republic of China in 1979.

The second part of the film looks at the results of those initiatives in today’s China, visiting high-tech global giants Tencent and Alibaba and China’s top universities Tsinghua and SUStech. We visit a high-speed rail workshop and the world’s fastest-growing container port; we interview the American lawyer who set up the first Chinese deals for multinationals including Exon Mobile and Roche Pharmaceuticals. Finally, we ask Robert Daly the Director of the Kissinger Institute on China and Ambassador Roy where they think China is heading, and if political reform will be on the agenda any time soon.

China’s decision to open up to the world 40 years ago has been called ‘the most important event of modern world history’, and it is one in which America played a crucial role. Today China is a major player, flexing its muscles on the global stage. In this film, Michael Wood tracks the beginning of their meteoric rise, looks at the extraordinary scale of present-day developments and asks both Chinese and US experts for clues to the future.

With extraordinary access to key witnesses, this timely and important film tells the story of How China Got Rich.

Political stability, Education, Infrastructure, Pro-Business policies. This is what is required for the government. On the people side, good work ethics, strong desire for change. These are the key for success.

People in general don’t care about democracy. They just want a high quality of life. Food, shelter, entertainment & safety.

The most powerful quote by Deng Xiaoping - 'The time has come to liberate our minds'.
  • perhaps the most fair and unbiased documentary of china's growth I've watched.

First off, I am not Chinese and have never been to China, but I got to say that by what I can tell, Deng Xiaoping was a extraordinary human being who should rank right up there with the best there has ever been when it comes to revolutionary change. I mean just look at what the guy accomplished through vision, determination and an honest care for his people and their future! If that isnt extraordinary , then I dont know what is! Truly incredible! Great documentary! I really enjoyed it! Thanks!

China is a country with a learning organization. After 2000, state leaders have formed a system for participating in collective learning. They need to participate in collective learning about 40 times a year. They invite experts and scientists from various countries to give lectures to them. When leaders of other countries are busy with elections, they are constantly learning and thinking, and making scientific and rich long-term plans. This is one of the reasons for China's long-term and stable development.

I have been an expat to China for 25 years, and witness the progress over the year. This documentary is a good report and fair assessment of China. We feel safe and well respected as foreigners working in China. The young and educated are all eager to learn, hard working and never mind to use weekends to improved their education or knowledge. People from the countryside works hard in the big cities in order to get a better living and send money back home to their parents. The local couriers makes only a fraction of a dollar for each delivery package and yet they deliver so many packages and work long hours that they can afford to buy a house in their hometown. As I recall one of the Alibaba's delivery boy worked his way up and got a senior position. When Alibaba got listed in New York, he was one of the member who went to New York with the CEO Ma to ring the IPO bell.

I am 55. My Grandad used to be in the Royal Navy in the Far East Fleet and he used to sail up the Yangtze River. He told my dad who later told me he remembered seeing lots of dead people floating in the River. People that had starved to death and there bodies had floated downstream. Whatever you might think of China and the Chinese Communist Party it is very very nice to know that things are much better there now.

"The time has come to liberate our minds" is the most underrated statement.

Jimmy Carter and Deng Xiaoping were both decent human beings who acted for the greater good. Sadly, great people like them are few and far between.

Chinese can go anywhere and make a decent living because they work harder, seldom complains, are not trouble makers, continuous learning to gain knowledge and wisdom, save money for opportunities, maintains a low profile and focus on long term goals.

China got rich through sheer hard work, diligent, honesty, and determination for the betterment for their people. No exploitation of others, no enslaving of others, no war waged against others and no colonizing of others. Their willingness to work, slog with sweat and toils are the hallmark of their success.

Fantastic documentary! The past 40 years China concentrated their resources on the economy, education, infrastructure, pro- business policies etc and achieved it's current status in the world. During the same time, the West, especially USA spent vast amounts of money on war!
