Unreal Engine 5 is a state-of-the-art engine and editor with photorealistic rendering, dynamic physics and effects, lifelike animation, robust data translation, and much more—on an open, extensible platform that won't tie you down.

The Backrooms is an urban legend and creepy pasta that tells the tale of an endless maze of randomly generated office rooms. It is characterized by the smell of wet carpet, walls with a monochromatic tone of yellow, and buzzing fluorescent lights.

I think that you don't need a environment artist. You are making this game look very good.
  • General horror tip: show your monsters rarely, when you show them don't let the player get a good look at them, and don't let your player die too often. Ideally you want to maximize close calls while minimizing actually getting caught. Dying too often is the fast track to making an unscary game. One thing you might do is in level 0 have it be mandatory that the player come across a journal before the ladder room, which either you're free to look through at any point in the game or the relevant levels' page shows as the loading screen between levels. it can tell you just enough info per level so you don't get killed over and over trying to figure out what to do and lose the horror factor. Also I feel like having a hallway where you either get killed or don't depending on rng doesn't sound very fun but maybe that's just me Edit: you can escape the backrooms by falling and randomly clipping out. You just can't do it intentionally and there's no guarantee you won't clip out somewhere that kills you

I'm coming back to this after Update 4. Love to see how the game progressed. I love how the entities in level 1 and 2 were replaced with less scary smilers lol. Also he added 3 levels he said he wouldn't
  • @smartpug967
Wait, you made this? I remember stumbling upon it on Steam not that long ago lol. Looks really good! I think you're being a bit harsh on yourself, especially if you made it in a week!
  • @LordKanter
this has so much potential to be a great horror game if you keep developing it. I think adding slight camera smoothing, hearing yourself breathing, and the fluorescent light sounds would help a lot.

Man, Its been 1 year since this project started. Its crazy how nostalgic this is to me now, Happy Anniversary to your project Fancy! : )

"i'm not an environment artist" proceeds to generate beutiful and good looking manifestations of some of humanity's most vehement nightmares
  • @puffcap_
i think the wheat field would be a cool reprieve from the claustrophobic dimly lit, completely enclosed levels. You could come up, out of a shed or outhouse or something

Making this a multi-player game would be so funny. With proximity chat, the possibilities are endless. You should also add the boring levels as it adds suspension and makes the game more accurate with the lore.
  • @RaphooComix
I love how he intended this for all fun and jokes for his friends and such, now its serious and a full on game

There's actually a lot of ways to get out of the Backrooms, they're just very rare and / or on extremely high floors. "The End" is not actually the last level, just a trap level meant to coerce survivors into settling inside it.

“I am not an environmental artist so it is a little bit rough around the edges.” Proceeds to show footage of an extremely good looking game
  • @urest
    This is where it started.
  • I love how you said you weren't going to make level 6 level 7 and level 10 but in the future you actually did.
  • @alexlg8079
Dude i would love to see level 7, yes its an ocean, but the important part is what's in it, a bunch of unknown creature skeletons, underwater caves, and most importantly the thing of level 7. Honestly i would be thrilled to be able to play it!
  • @Fob327
I think you should add steam workshop support later on. Wouldn't it be really cool if there was a backrooms game that had modding support to add just anything in the backrooms? You should focus on polishing the game and making it better before adding mod support though, but that's just my opinion. Keep up the great work and i will definitely be downloading this game when it comes out.

6:06 I just decided to watch the first vid again and I find it funny how all the levels that he called boring are now in the game
