A BBC investigation has used computer generated reconstructions to reveal what life is like inside Cecot, El Salvador’s so-called ‘mega-jail’.

The reconstruction was made possible thanks to videos and photos shared by the government, and media outlets who were given access to the prison before it opened.

Cecot has become a symbol of President Nayib Bukele’s notorious "war against gangs", which the country’s ministry of security says has resulted in the detention of at least 68,000 people since the campaign began in March 2022.

I live in El Salvador, and the report fails to specify that 97% of Salvadoreans approve of the measure, which means that even the families of the detained know their relatives committed crimes and deserve to be there. Also for context. The reason why inmates in this prison need to remain isolated, even from their families, is that they often send "Willas" or messages to their operatives through family visits or their attorneys. I hope that the failure to mention the above points is due to incompetency on the BBC's part, and not and active attempt to misinform their viewers.

i'd say about 90% of those inmates don't care about your human rights

Anyone who is feeling sorry for these people really have never had to live in a community with them running riot, taking everything you worked hard for, murdering your family and friends, destroying your business and kidnapping your family. Hopefully México will start to implement something similar so that the country can start to move forward and begin to heal from the past 30 years of misery and devastation caused by these gangs.
  • I’m from El Salvador and trust me when I say this but the country has honestly gotten better since bukele came into office, country is way safer than compared to when I went in 2012 that year was the worst ever thank god the country is safer because I went this year in April and seriously less crime and more tourists!!!

To anyone outside El Salvador how sees these videos and feels empathy for these criminals, I want you to know us salvadorans feel nothing but disgust for these beasts and we wholeheartedly believe they deserve to be there. :)
  • People who aren’t from El Salvador really have no place to comment. They didn’t see firsthand how badly these gangs terrorized innocent civilians.
  • My parents were finally able to visit to el salvador after fleeing as children, and I was finally able to go for the first time in my life, BECAUSE its only been safe until now, our family would tell us literally to not go before all this

I grew up in El Salvador and I'm going to say this: If you have never lived in El Salvador you will be wondering why these people are in in jail and do not get enough proteins and the square footage recommended by the human rights watch. BUT if you have lived through this hell, and have family members or friends that were murdered exhorted or raped by these animals, you are now wondering why these people are even getting fed.

Remember, for each of these men, there are countless victims and families of the victims that are still hurting and in pain.

Just returned from 2 weeks travelling through El Salvador, mainly walking and taking buses. Safe and secure everywhere I went. Friendly, hard working people out and about, more than willing to help with questions, even if they don't speak English. Learned lots about the country's tumultuous history, they're now heading in the right direction and have a real future ahead of them. Where were the human rights activists for the victims of the gang's horrendous crimes against these people. Human Rights Organizations can take a hike. Time for some law and order focused on criminal activity everywhere in the world.

Human rights groups don't approve, but human rights groups didn't have to live under the constant threat of gang violence.

Talk to their victims, don't talk to their accomplices. The family members knew exactly what they were and what they were doing!
  • What’s is inhumane is the brutality they gave to innocent families. Unless we specifically lived in that kind of hell we don’t have no right in how they stop it. I am praying for El Salvador.
  • We are bless to have president Bukele!, you can see other countries with the same problems and they don't do anything about it for their citizens.

There are people who FLED their homes due to the gangs and the relentless crime. This is what needed to be done. Well done El Salvador!

“There's only one path for a gang member. jail or death. There’s no other “ Nayib Bukele

I don’t care what the human rights activists have to say. All you have to do is look at the drop in crime in El Salvador. I hope the people of El Salvador will have the peace and safety they diserve. I would love to visit the country one day! Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
