He's an addict. He has a need for money and attention. the only way he can make his money now is at the expense of those who give him attention. It's like a drug addict stealing money from their grandma to get their next high. His addiction hurts everyone who associates with him. He's been pretty high up socially and financially for too long and can't accept that he'll probably never get there again. That's the only place he'll be happy.
