In this episode of the Mano a Mano podcast, George Laws-Garcia and Martin Rivera discuss the 2024 presidential election and its affect on efforts to gain statehood for Puerto Rico. We delve into the upcoming locally sponsored plebiscite aimed at addressing Puerto Rico’s territorial status and its implications under the Puerto Rico Status Act.

Special guest Jose Carrion III, the former chairman of Puerto Rico's Financial Oversight and Management Board, joins the show to discuss the economic and fiscal reforms in Puerto Rico under the PROMESA legislation and its impact on the island’s competitiveness and quest for statehood. The discussion also covers political developments from the recent Republican National Convention, the transition in leadership within Puerto Rico's pro-statehood party, and the broader national security and economic arguments for Puerto Rico’s statehood from a Republican perspective.

  • Did you read what Congress says about territories it could dispose of them anytime, why haven't they dispose of Puerto Rico? Independence is for people who dream to far!!!!!!

Sorry /lo siento, you lost me at "decolonize Puerto Rico". As one with family still on the island, this statement is false. Is staring with a lie, or hyperbole at best, the best way to promote one's cause? If PR wanted independence tomorrow, the USA would say "Vaya con Dios/Go with God". Why? PR has half the annual per capita income of Mississippi, America's poorest state. This equates to a huge entitlement burden on U.S. taxpayers. Added bonus: PR has a debt to income ratio worse than any state. So, PR paying back $70 billion is going to happen how exactly, and by whom if PR becomes a state? Please debunk that Leftists/Democrats are pushing for DC and PR statehood .... to garner 4 more Democratic Party Senators. Unless and until that's debunked ...anything else discussed is a shinny object.
