Steam engines have incredible torque for the size compared to combustion as the simply build more steam pressure if it stalls.. The slower it goes due to load the more torque it outputs.
  • that would make for a realllllly cool little steampunk appliance, like a tatoo gun, or a small reciprocating saw, or a die grinder.... the possibilities!

"I will increase the capacity of the boiler..." I will increase the capacity the piston..." "I will increase the capacity of the flywheel. .." "I will increase the capacity of the boiler..."
  • I really think with modern improvements a steam engine could actually be practically utilized in a vehicle
  • That's cool. Now if you were able to make a condenser and feed the water back into the boiler, you be able to run it so long as you can keep the fire going.
  • It was puttering and I was like "that's cute" and then it got going and I was like -- woah
  • Not just showcasing, but suddenly adding new machining content. Very good! Much appreciated.
  • @flitriver
I really enjoyed watching the machining process a lot more than the engine running. Good job!

I think you should try making a closed loop steam engine so you don't use up the water. That could be a cool next project :)
  • That's a cute engine that does what it's supposed to do. If I made one I'd polish that brass to a mirror finish and set the little jewel in a curio cabinet for a conversation piece. Engrave my name and date on bottom so grand kids can say, "I can't believe grandpa actually made that pretty little thang !"

Loved the modifications to an already neat little steam engine. Thank you for sharing.
  • MY 6th - 8th grade shop teacher Mr. Bogert made a steam engine so small that 6 of them could fit on a dime. It was featured in "Ripley's Believe it or Not". He powered it with compressed air. Congrats, you do beautiful work.
  • @rowgler1
Do you think 'modern steam' has a future in residential/camp sized engines that use multi-fuels? The Stirling engines don't have much torque, but the modern materials available now make the neat little models more scale-able. It seems like commercially available steam engines have always been either huge or small models. The technology could be up graded for practical off grid use.
  • From now on, everytime I close my eyes at night, I will see those unsightly, unfinished solder blobs on the inside of this shiny new reservoir..
  • A very nice single cylinder oscillating engine. It is well made and a little honing of the valve gear and a gasket on the boiler thread would correct the little errors seen in this video. Congratulations.
  • Damn I straight up forgot that I was subbed to this channel and how much I loved it till right now haha.....
  • I love this channel , as I love the whole "that works but i'm sure we can improve it" mindset :)
