Up In The Air (Dale Wicks original)

Published 2020-03-24
I wrote this song when I didn't know what to do with myself after all my gigs got cancelled because of COVID-19. Like a lot of artists & many workers, I'll probably be out at least a couple thousand bucks by the time this is through. Kind of bummed me out and made me question my life choices, even though there's no earthly way I could've predicted this back when I started years ago. I regret nothing, but I do wonder from time to time.

Anyway, my friend Melissa Dylan came over to help out with some harmonies prior to the lockdown and we shot this video in my weird 70's-looking basement. Cheers! Be healthy, my friends.

LYRICS:

I'm feeling so up in the air
I'm up in the air

I took the long way & sang my own song way too long
& it's a short view to settle in where you belong
You can't sing for your supper when nobody's buying
& everyone's lonely & everyone's crying
The grasshopper starves in the winter when the cupboard is bare

I'm feeling so up in the air
Does anyone hear?
Does anyone care?
I'm up in the air
& what I do next & what I do now
Is not here & not there

I hadn't started to feel heavy-hearted 'til now
What I've got to show for the things that I know has run out
I'm not worried 'bout dying before I have lived
But I want to give all that I've got to give
A man who can sing what he thinks is exceedingly rare

I'm feeling so up in the air
Does anyone hear?
Does anyone care?
I'm up in the air
& what I do next & what I do now
Is not here & not there

I didn't plan to stay home
I didn't plan for my plans to be gone
I'll wait & I'll see
What a month on my own does to me

But as long as I'm singing, I'll still be content
Maybe I'll wonder where the money all went
I'll soar on a new set of wings if you'll loan me a pair

'Cause I'm feeling so up in the air
Does anyone hear?
Does anyone care?
I'm up in the air
& what I do next & what I do now
Is not here & not there
