Illuminations Studios and Nintendo have teamed up to produce the movie based on the universe of the famous game: Super Mario Bros. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (who previously worked together on the Teen Titans Go! (2013-2020), as well as its film adaptation (Teen titans go! to the movies, 2019), the script is signed by Matthew Fogel (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019), Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022)). Chris Pratt will lend his voice to Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy to Princess Peach, while Charlie Day will take on the green hat of Luigi, Jack Black will be Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key will assume the mushroom head of Toad, Seth Rogen will be Donkey Kong, while Fred Armisen will play his grandfather, Cranky Kong, and finally we will find Kevin Michael Richardson in the role of Kamek as well as Sebastian Maniscalco in that of Spike. The film is produced by Chris Meledandri the founder and head of Illuminations Studios, in collaboration with Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures.

It is the third feature film adaptation of Nintendo's Mario video game franchise, following the anime film Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986) and the Hollywood live-action film Super Mario Bros. (1993). After the critical and commercial failure of the 1993 film, Nintendo was reluctant to license its intellectual properties for film adaptations. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in developing another film when Nintendo was bringing its older games to the Virtual Console service, and through Nintendo's work with Universal Parks & Resorts to create Super Nintendo World, he met Illumination founder Chris Meledandri. By 2016, the two were discussing a Mario film and in January 2018, Nintendo announced that it would collaborate with Illumination and Universal to produce it. Production was underway by 2020. On October 6, 2022, a teaser trailer for the film was shown via a Nintendo Direct.

The film's first visuals were unveiled in a teaser poster the same day of the cast's announcement in September 2021, showcasing a glowing question block. Another teaser poster was posted on the official film's Twitter account on October 4, 2022, featuring Mario's backside, an assortment of Toads, a Cheep Cheep, and Princess Peach's castle. Additionally, a Nintendo Direct presentation dedicated to the film featuring the first teaser trailer was announced to be livestreamed on October 6, 2022; the trailer will also be screened at New York Comic Con 2022 on the same day. Upon the release of the teaser poster, Chris Pratt promoted the film on Twitter, saying it's "very special." Public reception to the poster was largely positive; praise was directed towards the faithfulness of the environment and visuals to the usual aesthetic of the series, though many jokingly lamented the apparent reduction of the size of Mario's rear. On October 6, the teaser trailer was released, showcasing the basic story and characters. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 7, 2023 by Universal Pictures.

Push everyone else aside. This is Shigeru Miyamotos moment. The man has worked all his life for this moment. For Mario to go from a few pixels to the big screen is 🥰

  • Chris Pratt wearing the red suit and Charlie Day the green one is a brilliant touch

Anya looked cute and excited, Chris and Charlie dressing as color coded suits and just acting like brothers is the most wholesome thing, and Jack black is always acting excited and serious for these movies

Chris Pratt posing with Shigeru Miyamoto. What a strange and bizarre world. This movie is going to make a LOOOOOT of money, so no wonder all these trained Hollywood actors look so happy to be there.

What a wild moment that must've been for Miyamoto. He's said he hardly gets recognized in Japan but now he's posing for dozens of cameras on a red carpet for a Hollywood movie premier.
  • Happy for Miyamoto to see his creation become bigger than ever but I wish Charles should have shown up too , that guy deserves so much more for building Mario’s legacy to what it is today as well
