VTOL VR Mid Air Refuelling

Publicado 2022-05-11
I had a request to make a refuelling video. I definitely not the best at it, but hopefully you can find something useful in the video.

I'm open to requests for guides on the game so if there is anything I can help with just let me know in the comments.

I also have a discord server where I play regularly and help other players so if you ever want to play along, come join us.

"All we're gonna do is formation flight with him". Yea, that's the hard part.

I'm late to the party, but if you want a target's airspeed you can always lock it on radar, and look at the readout

Ferrets being the only person who makes everyone in the game know what they are doing.

The guide lights on the the belly of the tanker are, as you guessed it, designed to guide you to the optimal position for refueling; the left column of lights are your vertical positioning lights (how far forward or back you are to the boom) and the right column of lights are your horizontal positioning lights (how far to the right or left you are from the boom)

The tanker being on a constant bank angle is not the most helpful thing either.

one more tip for you guys, try to set the joystick's sensitivity to 0.60 or 0.80 to ensure that you only do minor change to your aircraft while matching up with the tanker

Thank you for the time you put into these videos and the content within them!

Another trick is to keep in mind that the refueling boom describes an arc from the back of the tanker. By changing your altitude relative to the tanker, you also change your relative distance from the tip of the boom as it swings up and down to match your new altitude. You can use this to help keep the hose at optimal length in the second or so lag between throttle input and engines spooling up or down.

I find it helps to make small circles with both controllers to stay centered on the boom. The throttle just rolls slightly up and down, just enough to take up the slack in the boom.
  • I remember that one time I completed the objectives for naval test lake mission but I was to low on fuel to rtb and the tanker just wouldn't let me refuel and I failed the mission after 15 attempts.

This game is hard. Even the instructional video has a hard time doing it. Trying to do this and landing on the aircraft carrier.

Nice video, after flying a lot with the chopper. This helped increase my skill higher

Tried another rollercoaster refuel ride just now. Even without talking, it is hard to control pitch, roll and speed at the same time :-) Am constantly getting into pilot induced oscillations (PIO) once I get near the tanker. Will try to use the autopilot for speed next time round, hope that helps. With the F-24 the refuel probe is behind the cockpit, so you have to use the positioning lights for relative altitude and distance. Thanks for your video's will keep trying to do it once without disconnecting.
  • The lights are also used for when you have a aircraft that has the refuelling boom go behind the pilot meaning they can not see where it is, this makes the lights very necessary with lining up and is there only way of lining up

You can use flap to generate drag for better speed controlling

bro every time i try to refuel mid air im connected to the fuel line, and the pilot of the fueling plane just decides to turn and throw me off

Oddly enough I do better at this when I switch off flight assist. I get finer control that way.
