A tale of the Hiigarans learning the hard way that: When you pick a fight with a guy bigger then you, make sure your first shot knocks him out. They're failure to heed this lesson would have consequences lasting for thousands of years.

The Homeworld Revelations RPG Corebook has been released, and it turns out I will have to redo this video (yay). Most of the core ideas here about the pre-exile era seem to have been kept, but certain others like the meaning of Unbound, and the expanding of certain other bits of lore have been added. I just got the book now so I haven't fully dived it, but here's what I surmised: - The Hiigarans were aggressive - The Taiidan Empire used political manuvering with the Council to get the disputed worlds between them and Hiigara - Hiigara found the 2nd Hyperspace core and placed it in "Sajuuk's Wrath" that led a fleet to wipe out the Taiidani and attack the Bentusi - In the aftermath, the Taiidan Navy struck back so hard against the Hiigarans that it forced them to surrender and go into exile. Also about the Unbound, yes, they went with the Cata definition where it's guys/girls/& others jacked into their ships. So those who brought up concerns of me using the HW2 definition (Any race that has Hyperspace) have been proven right in the end. FUTURE EDIT: Homeworld 3 has just been released. While I haven't bought the game yet ($80 CAN is a lot yo), there's a good chance certain parts of this origin tale have been retconned. If it has, I'll add to it a future updated "Before The Exile" video at some point.

One example of this game's attention to detail is that the Taiidani ion frigates are also called Sajuuk's Wrath... This name was definitely chosen to raise the fleet morale.

Homeworld is fantastically rich with lore. I remember back in '99 i bought HW off the shelf and it came with a grey book that was just PURE information and art. Have been a fan ever since.

It's entertaining how Homeworld was clearly inspired by Battlestar Galactica and the Battlestar Galactica remake clearly has elements inspired by Homeworld

Feed me more retro science fiction lore you wonderful space man
  • If you return to the Karos Graveyard in HW1, most of the ships deposited there resemble the post-Kharak Kushan ship design; sleek, curved, and with elongated engine nacelles. They look like ancient versions of the ships you command in the game. My head canon was always, that these were the defeated or surrendered fleets before the exile, and were left there to rot. I only wished that the game addressed this, the way they found similarities in origins with the Kadeshi cultists and included that in the story. When you first arrive at Karos, there is a derelict heavy cruiser floating near the Mothership's location, and fleet research reports they are ready to research "heavy guns", no doubt from seeing them on the derelicts they encountered there.

Man, Homeworld is such a beautiful and interesting setting. I remember reading somewhere on the tubes about this piece of history. Thanks for doing it such justice Mac. Certainly looking forward to future explorations

2:10 actually the Bentusi called themselves unbound whilst the rest of the galaxy are called bound with the exception of Keran Sjet.
  • @CaptainSentry
Hiigaran attacks the Bentusi The Bentusi: "I see you have chosen death."

One thing about the exile. I believe a term was that none were permitted to aid or follow the fallen. And yet a taidan ship deployed an orbital weapons platform over Kharak. I'm reasonably sure that was a violation of treaty. Meaning they had NO grounds to glass Kharak since they violated the treaty LONG before the Kushan did.

There's a very good chance that I may have to come back to this topic with new and updated information, because of the upcoming Homeworld Tabletop RPG, Homeworld: Revelations. As it turned out they recently announced that they're bringing in one of the original writers for the Homeworld Series to work on their Core Rulebook, which is supposed to be filled with all sorts of delicious lore about the history of the Homeworld universe from the beginning up to the start of Homeworld 3 I think. Since I was already deep into working on the video at the time, I didn't want to just junk it and wait for the new RPG book to come out. So I'm going to release what I have for now, and when the book is released in Winter of this year, I can make another updated video based on the lore from the Corebook. Hopefully, I wont have to change too much. As an aside, on the extreme off-chance if anyone working on the RPG is watching, I'd like to ask if maybe we can get a canon location for the Taiidan Empire before they annexed the Hiigarans? That part bothered me more then it should have while working on this, as it seems no one officially placed them in the galaxy besides a mention that they "Bordered the Hiigarans". And maybe a little more detail about how Hyperspace works, pleeease.

Count me in about "Holy Hell these Hiigara skyboxes are amazing"
  • @alkalinik
It is not sure that the progenitors are dead... they just dissappeared from the galaxy. It was said that they where not indigenious to the galaxy.
  • @inuboy867
I have been waiting SOOOO LONG for a Homeworld Lore video like this, thank you so much, thank you please make more, please?
  • @AoiNymph
Oh my, with Homeworld 3 now confirmed, I can't wait to see the chad lore enjoyers swarm here for context. Amazing, yet way too underrated video. GGs!
  • @iainburgess8577
A nostalgic retelling of a grand title from the days where narrative was the driving core of gameplay, rather than a thin intro & lip service.
  • @HevonCZR
Great overview!! Homeworld is a rich universe, hopping to see more content!
  • @Chumblybum
I find due to the back and forth and bad behavior on both sides it's hard to root for the Taiidani or Hiigarans
