Episode Notes:

1. All games are captured via a Mega SG.

2. If you're in the market for physical games, some of these are still quite affordable.

3. You could always tell when a developer really had some skill. Not only do most of these look great, but they also play and sound great too.

4. I had a list of about 30 games when I started. We could definitely do a part 2 and 3 to this if you guys enjoyed it.

5. I played my Genesis well into the life of the Sega Saturn. It's one of my favorite machines of all time, and its library is second to none in overall quality.

6. Like most of the best games, the majority here were system exclusive and appeared on no other hardware of the time.

7. Traveller's Tales also did Toy Story from the first video. Those people really could program well for the Genesis.

8. Shadow Dancer is one of the few games I actually prefer the console version of. The arcade was good, the Genesis version is great.

9. I was always a big fan of the Genesis hardware, even after the SNES showed up. The Genesis still had its own look and feel that stood the test of time well. Even when it was aged well past its prime, it still managed to impress.

10. A few of these games have Sega CD variants with even more content. Puggsy, Mickey Mania, and Out of this World spring to mind. There is also a Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast, but it's much less impressive there.

11. The SNES version of Virtual Bart is radically different visually in a few of the segments. If you ever get a moment, take a look at the bike segment. It's entirely flat Mode 7. The Genesis engine is far more impressive. I wanted to include a side by side, but I couldn't find my damn RGB cables before the video was due to go up.

12. I really wish there had been a Street Racer for the Sega CD. With the Genesis handling the track and the sprite scaling done by the Sega CD, it could have rivaled the Saturn version. Maybe.

13. ExoSquad pissed me off so much while capturing footage. I died countless times trying to get some good shots. I almost omitted the game entirely.

14. In the earliest stages of Ristar's creation, he was imagined as a bunny that could grab things with his ears. This lost out to Sonic's original design, but would still grow and mature into the game you see here.

15. The ending references Galaxy Force II and Super Hang On, two pseudo sprite scaling games of very different quality. The former was awful, while the latter was incredible for such an early title for the hardware.

One thing I love about this era of gaming and technology is the creativeness of developers to squeeze every last bit of power or ways to manipulate the hardware to do things it was not designed for.
  • Living through these times as a child = priceless. Sega attracted me from day one. Genesis is an incredible console. Parents purchased the Altered Beast package for me Christmas of release. Ripping open the wrapping and seeing the box for the first time in hand was something I will never forget. I sold everything years later as a teen (bad move) but got everything back and then some as an adult. I own all Genesis models and a much larger amount of physical games. Emulation is cool indeed but putting in the cartridge in the real hardware again = priceless. Great video.

I have to admit, as a life long Nintendo fan boy- this is impressive. Especially the 3d effects in red zone. I was always impressed with the smooth animation in Sega's Aladdin. I'm pretty sure it's better than SNES.
  • The Mega Drive always was the king of parallax scrolling to me developers really knew how to make it look beautiful

That Motorola X68000 CPU was an absolute beast. It was the heart and soul of Capcom CPS1&2, the Sharp X68000, the NeoGeo, the Genesis, and a bunch of other arcade machines. Even with the SNES's 7 different modes, the Genesis could rival all of their special effects with the creativity of the developers

Flashback was amazing visually and a nice step up from the impressive Out of This World. The rotoscope animation was silky smooth. It was also a great playing game for its time.
  • I remember discovering Thunder Force IV back in the early 2000s. I got a Mega Drive from a friend an bought a couple of games cheap online. This was was in the lot. And man, after I switched it on and that title screen and the awesome music was done, I just called my friend next door to have a look at this. We were mostly into PC gaming at that time, but heck: after he saw it as well, we dove into that game and enjoyed the heck out of it. Also played through the first Streets of Rage in coop on that very same day. I won't forget the impression this console made on us at that time, so long after it had been out of the market. The Mega Drive / Genesis is the stuff of legends. Still have that one, by the way, and my collection only grew. Cheers!

Traveller's Tales was also great at graphics!! GameHut really shows the details of how a lot of this was done in an easy to understand way!
  • I like the "push the limits of the system" videos. Cool to see what talented people could do.
  • The man that never sleeps to keep us entertained 👌

The tunnel effect in Ranger X was recently referenced in the fan made Sonic Triple Trouble remake.
  • A nearly hour long SEGA Lord X video to get me through the last hour at work? Thank you big guy!

One my fav Genesis games for gfx as an early release, Open world ocean game Bimini Run. Nice line scrolling for wave layers and color cycling for animation, change of weather. Ominous thunder storms sky gets dark and lightning strikes.. night time levels where the lightning lights up the ocean. Definitely one the few 16bit boat games and very few had the behind the view. Plus 2 player coop gunner support..

Loved every bit of this episode and of my gaming days in my old genesis back in the late 80s/1990s.
  • @KXPriestess
Where is Kid Chameleon??? Seriously one of the best visual experiences on the Genesis/Mega Drive! The most underrated game ever and most difficult! Show my favorite game some love one day...please
  • The Genesis was a 16-bit monster. I am interested in checking out Formula One. Jimmy White's Whirlwind Snooker looks damn impressive.
  • Love Mega Turrican and Panaramic Cotton and especially the music from mega turrican was awesome
  • @retrojoe85
Man, this was amazing! Not just for the effects themselves who shocked me from the very start to the end of the video, but also for the immense work you made just for this episode, X! You deserve to be employed by Sega as an official archivist, I'm not joking.
  • I didn't give my Genesis the love it deserved when I had it in 94-95, but I am these days!
