Lee Hsien Yang: Electoral boundaries need to be fair to Singaporeans

Publicado 2024-08-08
Lee Hsien Yang (LHY), brother of Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, criticized Singapore’s Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) on 8 August, calling it increasingly partisan and unfair.

LHY pointed out that the EBRC, unlike in other Westminster-style democracies, is convened by the Prime Minister, creating conflicts of interest. He suggested adopting models from the UK, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia to enhance the committee’s independence.

His remarks followed a rejected motion by Progress Singapore Party (PSP) members Hazel Poa and Leong Mun Wai, calling for a review of the electoral boundary determination process. Minister Chan Chun Sing defended the EBRC’s operations, claiming its independence and objectivity.

However, LHY, a PSP member, disagreed, criticizing the lack of transparency and justification for boundary changes, which he argued leads to unequal representation.

LHY referenced his father, Lee Kuan Yew’s past advocacy for an independent Boundaries Commission. He emphasized the need for early publication of boundary changes to ensure transparency and accountability, asserting that Singaporean voters deserve a fair and impartial electoral boundaries system.
