Smugglers left the Patel family to cross the Canada–U.S. border on foot during a snowstorm in 2022. The family of four didn’t survive. Indian police say they know who planned the fatal border crossing. The Fifth Estate’s Steven D’Souza followed their trail from Gujarat, India, to a suburb in Canada.

  • The Canadian and American dream is gone. Everything is too expensive so don't risk your life for something that is no longer here
  • @l.c.3150
At no point during the snow storm, none of the adults said this is not a good idea. Those smugglers valued money over lives. Heartless.
  • The grass always seems to look greener on the other side and we forget to water it on our side… RIP
  • 100k are you kidding me .if you can get your hands on that kind of money then you can set up a business in your own country
  • @mariej6962
Please, if you want to move to another country, do it legally. Poor beautiful babies, their future cut short, horrible experience.
  • @johnbalao711
That is gross stupidity. That is the price of illegally crossing the border of another country.
  • Do not try cross borders illegally ..any borders in the world.
  • He did serious crimes in india, what ?????and he is living here in canada? why? how?
  • @erepsekahs
The message is very simple: Don't try to cross the border.
  • @dhj1182
When people choose to do illegal things, bad consequences are possible. Terrible choices can have terrible consequences.
  • I remember reading about this family when it happened and it was clear the family was not destitute and had decent lives in India. .... I'm glad you have tracked this down but the first killers are the parents who risked their beautiful little children for greed. Hopefully the smugglers will be jailed for the rest of their lives. ...good work, fifth estate.
  • Just because you want to give your family a better future does not give you the right to enter a country illegally.
  • If you "want the best" for your children. You choose LIFE! My heart breaks over the unnecessary loss of life. It was the parents decision that caused their demise.
  • @shaunh2015
You know what would have prevented this tragedy. Crossing legally.
  • @JoinFCACC
45 months?!!!!! for human smuggling???? How is this even possible????
  • @ew4932
I just don't understand how anyone would ever risk their lives to get INTO the US while fleeing Canada.
  • Don't cross borders illegally anywhere in the world. When you make that decision, whatever happens is your own fault. Life abroad is not as rosy as it seems and includes a lot of struggle. Some succeed but the majority fail and spend their life doing low paying jobs in bad conditions. You atleast have your family for support back home.
