Milstein and De Sabata Brahms Violin Concerto 1950 NY Philharmonic

Publicado 2024-07-09
Another recording of a master at work - Nathan Milstein, violin, with the NY Philharmonic guest conducted by Victor de Sabata on March 19th, 1950. This is not the highest quality recording in the archive, but still Milstein’s glassy tones and incredible technique shine through. Of note - he is playing his own credenza in the first movement, as briefly explained by Jim Fassett in the slightly truncated intro.

This recording was ultimately released on vinyl in several forms that appear to now be on YouTube (along with other radio recordings like this one). But I think it’s important for completeness to include it along with my other NY Philharmonic radio broadcasts.

A fair amount of dips and fades, especially at the start. Not much I could do about them. I did refresh the sound with a bit of light EQ. The introduction was hacked up on the tape so I did some slight edits to make it a bit more understandable.

00:00 - Introduction by Jim Fassett
00:45 - Allegro non troppo
21:15 - Adagio
29:52 - Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace
