A playthrough of Irem's 1995 shoot 'em up for the Sony PlayStation, In The Hunt.

Played through on the normal difficulty setting showing the best ending.

Is it just me, or does this seem like it was intended as some sort of undeclared follow-up to the NES submarine shoot-em-up, Sqoon?

Anyways, great port of a good arcade shooter. It's really quite impressive (especially for how early of a PS1 game this was) that it handles the sheer number of sprites on-screen at once without any apparent slowdown! It really is an awesome looking 2D title, so long as you don't mind the slow pace and a fairly light challenge. It wasn't designed with the same level of sadism of R-Type, so don't be too concerned. It's surprisingly easy for a 2D arcade shooter.

And if anyone thinks that it looks like Metal Slug, there's a good reason for that - the Irem development team that did this game moved on to form Nazca, the company responsible for the Metal Slug series on the Neo Geo. (On a related note, they also did Irem Skins Challenge on the SNES, which explains why that game is so similar to the Neo Geo Neo Turf Masters game).

The nostalgia is very strong in this one.

Apparently, IN THE HUNT was released in 1993 before Metal Slug (1996). I don't understand why other people think this game copied Metal Slug wherein it seems to be the other way around.

Metal slug 3 jajajahaha en los juegos piratas, que buenos recuerdos lo jugaba con mi hermano
  • An excellent port of the arcade 2D shmup and spiritual successor to Sqoon (the NES submarine shooter). It was also developed by the same team that did Metal Slug, and is the clear predecessor to the Neo Geo classic series. Pretty damned sweet, I must say!

Esto si es nostalgia. Yo compraba el Metal Slug 2 o 3 para Play 1 y me salía este.

I have fond memories of playing this with my Dad when I was like 6 or 7. I always remember the train bit in the second level for some reason. Watching it back I realize I didn't remember it being that short because I was really bad at the game and rarely got past the 3rd or 4th level. Also i am so glad Google was able to put this as number 1 result from '2D submarine shooter PS1' lol.
