Is Transformers becoming stale? - Talon Discussions

Published 2022-03-31
The Transformers franchise is going strong, but lately, I feel like things have become a bit uninspired. Designs are a little too similar, the same characters get repeated, media does a lot of the same things, etc. This video takes a look at various aspects of the franchise to see if it has stagnated creatively and become stale.

Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
0:46 - Designs
4:20 - Toys
7:45 - Story/Characters and TV/Movies
11:52 - How Transformers got this way
13:39 - The Future

The music in this video is "Deep Blue", "Newdawn", and "Scifi" from Bensound and can be found here: www.bensound.com/royalty-free... and "Robots and Aliens" by Joel Cummins.

  • Botbots having completely new designs and ROTB’s creative decisions give me some hope that the G1 nostalgia trend is starting to die out. They could’ve done pure G1 for the designs but they’ve chosen Bayverse for Bee, Porsche for Mirage, potential armored transport truck for Prime, a mad max truck for Scourge, motorcycle for Arcee, van for Wheeljack, Bayverse/G1 mix for Nightbird, and a tow truck for Battletrap. Very interesting takes on each character. The rusted battle damaged designs for the Beast bots is also a nice change of pace that deviates from the OG. The Bumblebee movie’s decision to use completely original Decepticon main antagonists rather than preexisting ones was also nice. (With the exception of Seeker Blitzwing of course).

Couldn't agree more. Seeing the designs lined up like that chronologically makes it even more obvious that they're becoming the same. Not to mention that the franchise as a whole owes so much to the bayverse but a lot of fans don't want to admit it.
  • as the g1 fans hate other universes and esspecially bayverse, I wish and hope there will come the day the g1 designed transformers fall down sooo hard that noone would want to revive g1 for years

100% agree. I think the first waves of Legacy and Studio Series for the beginning of this year alone (Which is literally just PureG1, NuG1, and non-G1 with G1 shoehorned in) have proven your point. And it’s crazy that fans actually defend this. It’s like eating the exact same food every single day and yelling at anyone who dares to ask for something different to eat.
  • Hard agree. Take the great engineering of the figures in recent years and apply it to some original and fresh character designs. Stop the G1 nostalgia pandering.
  • @bytisoli
The stuff with Studio Series and G1-ifying non g1 characters is what upsets me the most as I've come to terms with Generations being "The g1 line". I've always felt like that Studio Series was something for non g1 fans, but I guess that changes now.

The reason why I stop collecting Transformers toys or watching the new shows is because I didn't see anything unique anymore. No longer do we get characters like Knockout, Armada version of Starscream. Everything is G1 now, reimagine anything but must have G1 designs, the creativity is so limited. As for why I stop collecting the toys, why would I buy a G1 inspired Combiner Wars Optimus Prime when I can just wait for a G1 inspired WFC Siege Optimus Prime, I can just wait for another few more years to get the same but better G1 Optimus. Is not like Armada Optimus or Animated Optimus where they at least look different. That's just my opinion, if the fans love it, great for them, it can be beneficial for young newcomers to get into the franchise and for Hasbro to keep their trademark.
  • I’ve pretty much lost so much interest in the Transformers franchise when it comes to the movies and shows after the Bumblebee movie I was so greatly disappointed about not only that they would never finish Bayverse properly but I finally saw the ugly side of the fandom so now I just stick to the toys
  • @izziewolf2834
I really miss stuff like Classics and Universe 2.0 that did really neat modernizations of G1 designs.
  • @TRSleekZ12
Unpopular Opinion: Franchises are getting stale nowadays because they rely too much on nostalgia than trying to be more risky and more original. (Don’t ever change my mind)

Late comment, but it is something that is bugging me. There really isn't much out there for fans outside of G1 or the movies. G1 has the Mainline, Masterpiece, SS86, Super 7 (Ultimates and ReAction), Yolopark, 3rd Party MP, 3rd Party Legends, Comics, Monopoly. Bayverse had a fraction of SS, Threezero, Prime 1 statues, (very expensive niche), one Yolopark model kit, ONE MPM a year (if even that after Brawl), Third Party MPs Rebootverse has Concept Art SS, Yolopark, Trumpeter, Third Party MPMs, Threezero Beast Wars has Season 1 characters and a few S2 and S3 character updates, Super 7 ReAction, MPs, 3rd Party Transmetal MPs, and Monopoly, (ROTB can be included if you want) Prime has updated KO of figures and G1-ified Legacy figures Animated, Rescue Bots, Cyberverse, RiD 2015, has G1-ified Legacy figures Armada had Legacy figures and a few 3rd Party MPs Energon has one core figure because they admitted they don't have faith in that show. Pretty much any 3rd party license does G1 stuff only with an occasional odd ball

Thank you, finally someone says it. Transformers is know this: G1 here, G1 there, G1 everywhere. I can't see it anymore. The Japanese G1 designs and the designs from the Decepticon Justice Division are the only G1 designs I like. Combiner Wars, Titans Return and Power of the Primes was a good line of toys for the G1 fans, but that's about it. But let's be honest, there are a bunch of charackters I'd like to see in other designs. If I hear Bonecrusher, I think of Bayverse Bonecrusher. Same with Blackout and other Bayverse charackters. I also want see Baricade , how he looked in the Bayverse and not as a Prowk recolour. I prefer the Movie Constuckticons more than the G1 Constuckticons. Same with the Dinobots. I just prefer the Bayverse designs more. And I want see the Dreads, Stinger and Nitro Zeus. But let's get away from the Bayverse and take a look at the Unicron Trilogie. I miss charakters like Armada Thrust, Thunderblast, Sideways, Ransack, Scourge and Crumplezone. Or where are Lugnut or Blitzwing from Animated. And Japanese charakters like Deathsaurus, Leozack, Lyzack, Esmerel and Star Saber deserved the Spotlight to. And I agree more with you. The Media is the same. Allsparck, to much Bumblebee, ( I like Bumblebee, don't get me wrong), only G1 designs, the Autobots are to stupid to kill, woke culture, redemed Megatron, „ Me Grimlock" and more. I miss the days where Megatron was just pure evil. I have also no problem when Optimus killed his enemys brutal. I never saw Bayverse Optimus as a psycho + Unpopular opinion: AOE is my favourite movie. I have a lot of respect for Animated because it also incorporates other continuities like Japanese G1, Unicron Trilogie and Bayverse. I hope Hasbro comes to their senses and gives something back to the Unicron Trilogy, Animated and generally the non-G1 fans. Edit: You have a new subscriber. (:
  • I’d agree that TF shows nowadays, especially the designs, are getting very repetitive.
  • @Protosilver97
The fact that in the thumbnail only one of the designs of the 2000's was not coexisting with the other different designs in said thumbnail, while all of the 2010's have coexisted for 3 years or maybe more is sad.
  • I completely agree - and I'm one of those G-1 fans they are targeting! I was a bit different than a good percentage of my age group in that I was EXCITED by Rodimus Prime, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Victory, Neo, RID, Animated, Prime....I felt like there was nothing wrong with loving the past but STILL wanting it to progress. New leaders, new characters, new dynamic, new factions, new style. Sadly, I kinda know what happened. G1 fans have been getting wealthier, larger, and more vocal as time has gone by, and all the nods they were getting for a long time weren't enough. In fact, I know those "almosts" felt like mockery to a good number of them (I'd hear the rants) - like Hasbro knew they could get money from them but didn't care what they actually wanted. From their point of view there has been almost a decade of "almosts" and to them they are finally getting the mainline masterpiece collection a lot of them always wanted. I'm happy for them. I am. I love these designs. Heh, time travels more quickly when you're old and the past 5 years feels like a few month used to when I was a kid. But I never stopped wanting Transformers to move ON. How did the Maximals and Predacons come into power? What happened after a post techno-organic Cybertron? Could we have a series where, say, Rodimus Prime functions almost like the President used to function in old action movies and we have an entire team of new transformers on a critical mission - there's so many ways to go. Hell, explore elements of Japanese continuity - I would LOVE a new anime style Transformers. Instead, my own group seems to have frozen Transformers in Stasis Lock, and it makes me sad. It's kinda like they were so traumatized by watching Prime die they spend the rest of their lives wanting to see him triumph over obsolescence over and over again. They don't get that all great characters have an end - Hercules burned to death, Samson brings the pillars down around his head, Robin Hood fires a golden arrow into the place where his grave will be placed, King Arthur throws Excalibur back into the hands of the Lady of the Lake - hell, in one of the better continuities a broken batman fakes his death so he can train a new generation before he dies. I'd take a continuity where Cheetor, or Alita One becomes a Prime, a Redeemed Megatron, SOMEONE BRAND SPANKING NEW - and they could easily do it while respecting the larger continuity. Sorry - it's a bit of a rant, but I had to throw my two cents in. Heh, I figure if the rest of my generation has been screaming at Hasbro and throwing their money at G-1 perfection, I have the right to post my little treatise on why that's NOT a good direction to KEEP GOING..... Feel free to bring it back periodically - we'll always love a good King Arthur story - but limit your myth-making to that and it's just dead lore, and people will tire of it.
  • Btw to explore some of the things that don't get much attention they could resign with Activision and make a few more stand alone games. Idk why they stopped working together anyway but it seems like a great idea because i really enjoyed most of their games.
  • @Spoot401
So....Predacon's Rising is technically a Transformers Prime movie, Hasbro. When we getting Studio Series figures of Transformers Prime.
  • @thepotatoshow1887
Copy Animated's formula and change up every major part of the franchise while maintaining the spirit of what made it great in the first place.
  • @APinchofBazel
Prime Wars, Cyberverse, and WFC were the absolute nadir of the TF shows feeling cold and soulless. Really hoping things’ll start bouncing back again with Earthspark, though it’s a…limited optimism.
