Zootopia seems like the perfect city. Anyone can be anything, predator and prey live in harmony and Zootopia is built so all mammals can live within the city. There are traveling tubes for hamsters, shoots for giraffes and a diverse number of biomes for all creatures; Zootopia really feels like the greatest mammal city in the world until we begin to uncover underwater creatures aren’t within this utopia.

  • "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." -Animal Farm
  • Dude, yeah the Zootopians are evolved beyond their instincts but they still need to eat. The predators still need to maintain their bodies' nutritional needs.

Why this isn't dark: -Their society is just like ours: we eat our fellow animals/mammals every single day. Not only that but they're also less intelligent than us, not having any sapience within them. -The aquatic mammals and fish have most likely not gained a level of sapience like land mammals (and animals) have, similar to us; we have evolved to become sapient, they haven't. So we use them as food. -Not only that, but carnivores will not be able to survive without flesh/meat since their digestive system is not adapted and would never be to only consuming vegetables and plants on a daily basis. So in order for a species to survive, what must be done must be done.

"They consume their fellow mammals." That's disgusting! takes another bite of steak
  • @dragonhorse8678
Well predators have to eat some kind of meat or they won't survive
  • @senorPachuChay
What if it's called Fishtown Market because the vendors are fish? And Blubber Chef because their chef is a whale? Eh? Food for thought?
  • @TheCanterlonian
pretty sure blubber chef is essentially like saying "fat chef" in our society, maybe the chef is an aquatic mammal?
  • @heartless2147
Do you complain when you eat meat? Of course not. Same thing applies in Zootopia. Fish and sea mammals are less evolved compared to Zootopians, so they don't see anything wrong with eating them. Like how we eat cows, pigs, chicken, etc. Better to eat a non sentient creature then a sentient one.

Humans always consume our fellow mammal, every single day. More than likely, aquatic mammal life never evolved like land mammal life because they never had the chance to socialize between predator and prey like they did. In the natural history museum, you can see the first interaction between predator and prey with a group of rabbits protecting themselves from one large cat. It's very likely that this socialization is what pushed them in the direction to evolve into a symbiotic social structure, that *eventually* allowed other prey and predator animals to join them. Dolphins and Whales are excluded because they live in a *VERY* different ecosystem than land mammals. I mean, how often do you speak to dolphins in the wild?
  • @redacted6813
I'm pretty sure it was explicitly stated that the mammals are smart, and literally only the mammals.
  • Even if the mammals in the sea evolved, the other, normal fish probably didn't, so it's fine they eat fish, since after all, predators can't survive on plants. Now the whale thing is a bit messed up. But not the normal fish.
  • As much as I love this movie, I really hope the people behind Zootopia explain how this world works
  • @min_i247
    Literally just described humans
  • @balyss4833
I saw a "Fish Market" shop in the background while watching the movie, and that confused me.
  • Sea mammals are a difficult topic to discuss. But the producers said in an interview that reptiles, birds, and other creatures that are not mammals are not in the movie because they felt it would be too difficult to use them so they just used mammals. I think that if other species of animals that are not mammals do exist in the Zootopia universe, then are not as evolved as the mammals and are just what they are in the real world.
  • @lawn_moa
some animal (ie: cats) can't survive on a vegetarian diet.
  • @KillerRabbitz
well the predators have to eat SOMETHING or else they'll starve!
  • @Achillez098
I think the real question is: What do the Predators eat in Zootopia? Prey eat plants, so nothing changes. But how did Predators deal with the necessary diet changes to make this "utopia" possible?
