This is a followup to my previous video: The Decline of Mario RPGs. If you haven’t watched that one yet I’d highly recommend starting there. This video will provide an overview and analysis of the story and general writing in Bowser’s Minions and Bowser Jr.’s Journey – something I believe is worth exploring because they’re honestly the best written “Mario RPGs” since Super Paper Mario and Bowser’s Inside Story in my opinion.

Wow this actually came faster than I thought it was going to. This will be an excellent morning watch. Once again, I have to say I'm glad that you're around and sure while you don't really go into gameplay you go into the plot of games rather greatly, and imo makes up for it. If I want someone to talk of gameplay, I can see KingK or someone but if I want to see someone talk of a story you're my number one. Can't wait to see what else you'll cover next 👏
  • @superresch64
While I liked Dream Team, I can agree that the Mario RPGs have sort of gone downhill ever since then. I loved these sidemodes for their glorious story tellings and loved what they add to original games and what else they added to Mario’s universe as a whole. RIP AlphaDream, we will miss ya’.

Though I really liked Dream Team and Paper Jam, I think these videos and the other ones about KH are great. You presented valid points and talked about the story of the games which is something not many people do. I must say I really enjoyed watching you and I think you should keep doing these kind of videos. You just obtained a new sub, keep up the good work man!

This is meant as a long comment about both your Mario rpg videos so I wouldn’t have to make two: The Mario rpgs I’ve played were Color Splash (fun, but zero substance when it comes to story), Super Paper Mario (favorite one and first game I played in the series. I really liked the story. I hope that one day they’ll improve the gameplay of that version, or a fan game will do exactly that), and the 3ds Mario and Luigi remakes. They were pretty fun. It’s sad how far the games have gone downhill. Luckily there’s fan games and Paper Mario inspired games (do you think you’d ever do a video on those?). I didn’t get far into either side story because I didn’t like the gameplay after a while. It definitely could have been done a lot better. I thought the stories had an interesting premise, and think that more Mario games should let you play as the bad guys. On the thing you said about how an open world can be great, but if a linear game has a better flow they should do that. I have that problem with BOTW. It’s a fun game, but the story was absolutely atrocious and all the interesting stuff happened 100 years ago. Plus, it has numerous issues like the shrines being slight variations of 3 types (they seriously should have had a few big dungeons like Hyrule Castle), the lack of enemy variety from previous games, stamina, weapon durability, and Ganon doesn’t really have much of a presence. This one guy Zaric Zhakaron (one of my favorite YouTubers. He talks a lot about rpgs, procedural generation in games, Elder Scrolls/Fallout, and other stuff like that. Something I find absolutely hilarious is how the Elder Scrolls lore community absolutely hates him because he mocks the stuff that doesn’t make any sense, the broken continuity, and other problems with the series while simultaneously giving praise to what works; and mocking the lore community for coming up with terrible explications for why what we see in game doesn’t reflect all the cool lore books you can find in the games) was saying that if you’ve only played a Bethesda open world game then you’ll think BOTW is really good, but if you take away everything that makes it Zelda you’re just stuck with a mediocre open world game who’s flaws will become much more apparent after the sequel inevitably fixes most of them. With an open world game if it’s like a Bethesda one where there’s plenty of side quests and the main quest takes you to different markers on the map then an open world story would work. But, as it stands BOTW only has a few interesting things and all of the stories are locked to the specific regions they take place in. I still really liked the game, but I’m not going to pretend it’s a masterpiece that has no flaws. I’m sure I just offended some babyman by saying this😂 It’s so interesting just how big of a detriment Miyamoto has became over the past two decades. Numerous horrible ideas are directly tied to him, but he gets a pass because people like the other stuff he’s made (he’s past his prime). Here’s a list of the various things he’s done I can think of off the top of my head: Dinosaur Planet being turned into Adventures because he thought Sabre looked like Fox which messed up the lore (I still really like Adventures, but lore wise it came out of nowhere. I don’t have many issues with the gameplay and it was my first game in the series. But, in terms of story it’s not compatible with Star Fox. I’m not a big fan of mystical elements in sci-fi unless said property was intended to have them from the beginning like Star Wars or 40k. If it’s something smaller and more mysterious like Fox’s dad’s ghost guiding you out in 64, or telepathy then I’m fine with that. It’s just super jarring going from how 1/2 and 64 were to Adventures. Hopefully Esphirian’s fan remake will fox a lot of these issues and better marry the two. Also, UndyingNephalim the guy who’s making Event Horizon recently put out a trailer for the game’s next update/demo and it’s narrated by Estelle Ellis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP_eJomGGUw), the horrible controls in Zero, wanting to take out the Rosalina’s storybook from Galaxy and removing all story connections in the sequel (thankfully someone told him no with the former), the direction Mario rpgs have taken, cancelling the Wii Star Fox prototype because he couldn’t think of a gimmick for it, and some other stuff. I’m sure this will be seen as blasphemy/sacrilege against the Nintendrone’s god. He can come up with some really good ideas, but he NEEDS someone to tell him no when he has a bad idea. Good video. I hope the Mario rpgs improve going forwards

Ahhhhhh now I feel like I need to play Minion Quest and actually go out and buy the Inside Story remake
  • @Master-Fawful958
19:37 That’s true and the point of forging the Miracle Cure was to break the Dark Star barrier. Or at least that was its PRIMARY purpose, but luckily they were able to kill two birds with one stone.
  • @Sprited
Hey yo I know you don't have a lot of subs or views but please please please dont be discouraged, i see so many lower viewed channels like yours pump out great videos but quit because they're underrated. You got this my dude!!! Great video as always!
  • @kazuYoshi_
YES, I really liked these side games for all the reasons you mentioned. The team building is really satisfying and the extra little nods and details were fun to see. But of course, the big surprise was the story, especially in Bowser Jr's Journey, being shockingly good. They actively make me want to see more of the koopalings despite their obvious overabundance lately. I really hope something with the M&L series somehow pulls through with the loss of AlphaDream, RIP
  • One thing I recently thought about when it comes to Bowser Junior’s journey that I think is really weird are the Shroobs. There’s that one level in the game where you go in Bowser’s freezer and some of them thaw out and you fight them there and that makes sense but later in the game you fight a ton of shroobs just outside bowser’s castle. One of them is even powered up with melatonin formula X. How many shroobs have thawed out? It’s possible the developers were just reusing enemies but there are already a ton of enemies in the game. Why use them again when it wouldn’t even make sense. Honestly part of me wonders if the original plan for the next Mario and Luigi game was to bring back the shroobs and this was supposed to be some type of foreshadowing
  • My number one hope for the new Mario and Luigi game is for captain Goomba to finally get to fight Mario
  • Honestly I really do want to like Minion's Quest, there is good stuff here, but it just does some stuff I really don't like: - Fawful-bots being the only thing used during the first castle town attack, feels like it undermines Cackletta a bit and if it's trying to say he's feeling traitorous, why would he save her soul later when she seems useless? - Taking Cackletta's bowser castle plan and retconning it into Fawful's despite him not understanding it at first, then making Cackletta too dumb to understand what was originally her idea (or they're sowing the seeds for a super deep dementia arc lol) - Fawful apparently flies back up to the castle after being defeated and talks to Cackletta before the Bros even enter the next room after his fight (since thats where the cutaway is showing them). Even if it can somehow be justified, I still just think it's dumb Some of the videos connecting it and the main plot are really weird (Minions flying to Bowser's Castle right after Bros. get like the 2nd or 3rd Beanstar piece, Popple allying with Birdo before his solo fight) but I'll be generous and assume that's just the people making the vids being weird It is not bad by any means, I actually like a good chunk of it, but I just strongly don't like some of the stuff it does
  • @theluigifan1
36:14 That’s quite a controversial take that’s sure to piss a lot of people off. Anyway, good breakdowns, man. Found your channel by complete chance and though I have some differing takes regarding certain aspects of both series, especially in regards to Super Paper Mario, I think you did a great job breaking down exactly why these games have had a steady decline since their respective third entries. You just received a new subscriber! I’m looking forward to seeing more of your content!
  • @dgc1570
Sadly, we will never see as to how the series would've went after the remakes. Due to Alpha Dream having had claimed bankruptcy. I do hope one day they are able to make a resurgence and give us something either akin to the bonus sections or more in line with the original trilogy. Until then, we can only hope for an indie game that captures the spirit of the original trilogy; much like what Bug Fables did
  • @dgc1570
Another shame, that those who haven't experienced the bonus sections such as myself will never be able to now; due to the recent shutdown of the Wii U and 3DS eshop. So unless you already own a copy of the remakes you're pretty much out of luck
  • Like your two videos on the writing qaulity of the Mario RPGs, and love that you gave the minions spin-offs a chance. These are the closest thing we have to a actual RTS game for Mario that we got (plus bowser's militaristic kingdom would be a good player to explore kingdom relations and expand mario's arch enemy.), That aside I like playing those modes in short bursts, tho I prefer Bowser Jr's mode more than the first minions mechanically, I do prefer shining the spotlight on a random Bowser minion who wasn't established yet(which I guess is why they didn't focus on the elite trio, I just wished they were just forming as side plot as captain goomba is still the main character)
  • @slashermaster28
You know, the more I think about how good the stories to these side games are, the more I wanna see Nintendo give us a spinoff turn-based RPG centered around some of Bowser's henchmen with Mario relegated to the background or not even there at all. Like it could be a Mario and Luigi style game with 3-4 playable characters, all with their own unique abilities and combo moves, or it could be more akin to SMRPG where you get multiple allies to choose from but can only use a certain number at a time. It's probably another idea that'll likely never happen, but I can't help but find that to be a fun idea.
